07 Jul Changing Our Negative Self Talk
We are not born with a negative view of ourselves. Negative self-perceptions develop as we encounter pain, neglect, rejection, or hurtful words. These and other unhealthy interactions with the human beings in our lives can cause us to begin hiding certain aspects of who we are, for fear that others might not accept us if we were to truly be ourselves. Another reaction to experiencing pain as we interact with people is to dislike ourselves. When we believe we’re the problem, it can cause us to decide not to “show up” in life. Agave Sozo (serving Phoenix, Chandler, and Gilbert) understands how negative experiences can affect a person’s self-perception. We’re a powerful inner healing prayer ministry that seeks to set people free to truly embrace who they were created to be and to live abundantly. Read on if you’d like to know more.
Have you ever reflected on the messages that your mind and heart are speaking when you experience a moment of negative thinking or self-hatred? We’ve all have tapes that play over and over again in our souls, like a broken record. And until we identify these tapes and silence their influence in our lives, they will dictate how we feel about ourselves and how we show up in life. Here are a few common heart messages that are associated with a negative personal mindset:
“I am not good enough,” or “I’ll never be enough.”
“I am not worthy of…love, acceptance, happiness, etc…”
“I always screw up.”
“I’m such a loser (or failure).”
“I am unlovable.”
“I have nothing to offer.”
“I will never amount to anything.”
“No one would notice if I were gone.”
Recognizing Who You Are
The truth is, there is no one like you in all of creation. Being you is the greatest gift you can give to the world. While it is one thing to read these honest words about your life, it is quite another to believe them deep down in your soul.
This is what God’s Word says about you:
- “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” Jeremiah 1:5
- “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:13-14
- “‘For I know the plans I have for you’, declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Jeremiah 29:11
- “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
Is there any resistance in your heart to the messages of these verses? If so, be assured you are not alone. When we have spent a lifetime listening to and believing the negative inner messages or tapes, simply reading the truth and meditating on it might not be enough to free us from the antagonistic self-thoughts that plague us. If you feel like you’re running into a wall and cannot overcome your negative patterns of thinking, call us at Agave Sozo inner healing prayer ministry in Gilbert, to make an appointment. We are passionate about your healing, and we want to see you grow into your true, God-created self.
